WHAT YOU CAN DO

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP THE
CAMPAIGN FOR FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT!

There's a whole raft of things you can do to help our campaign, and you don't need to be a committed activist to do most of them.

What's more, an hour's help, here or there, multiplied by hundreds (if not thousands) of people is likely to be a darn site more effective, and sustainable in the long run, than a campaign based solely on the efforts of a much smaller band of 'activists', however dedicated the latter might be!

As the supermarket slogan says "every little helps" so whatever it is that you might be able to do, however small, will help us in our fight:

* Join us! - For just £10.00 per annum you can vote at our meetings and enjoy the same membership 'rights' as everyone else. Even if you can't make our meetings in Manchester City centre, you can still get regular updates via our e-mail list, as well as via this web site.

Plus all those £10.00s add up, and we need that money, as well as cash from other sources, to finance our activities (i.e. to pay for meeting rooms, leaflets and other promotional material, etc). In that context, maybe you might also consider sending us a small donation?

See our Join Us/Affiliate page for details of where to send your cheques or postal orders.

* Help out with/attend/support our existing activities (see our Noticeboard for details of forthcoming activities). Many hands make light work! So any time you can spare would be invaluable to the campaign, even if it's only half an hour or so. Plus you'll be very warmly welcomed!

If you can't help out with any of those activities, you can of course, still help to get people to sign our petition, which you can download and print from this page. You can also encourage others to do the same, as again, many hands make light work!

* Help out with our web site and/or other promotional stuff. We need reports and photos from all the various activities we're involved with sending in to us, so we can update the site's content regularly, which will encourage people to visit it more often.

In this connection, you can also help us by sending us news articles and other clippings from your local papers that might be relevant to our campaign, as well as your own thoughts and comments, which we could include on our E-mails to the Editor page.

Plus you could help us with making banners and placards, which we will need on an ongoing basis. Just get in touch if you can help!

* Write to your MP and local Councillors - We have a draft 'template' for a letter you can use for this purpose which asks where they stand in relation to our demand for a free, integrated, massively expanded and publicly owned public transport system. If you can do this, and you get a reply, then please let us know what your MP and local Councillors have to say, so we can inform other local voters where they stand.

It's likely that a few will actually support what we are fighting for, and might even lend their support to our campaign and take up the issue seriously in Parliament or in their local Council Chambers, so it's well worth the effort.

* Set up a local campaign group - We are ideally wanting to set up a network of supporters groups and sympathisers throughout Greater Manchester and can help you with press releases, publicity and the organisation of meetings to do precisely that.

However, if you think that might be a little too ambitious, why not just invite someone from our campaign to come and speak to a group you might already be a member of, such as a tenants or residents group, community campaign or your trades union branch or local Trades Council, and we will do the rest.

The more we can spread the word of what we are fighting for throughout Greater Manchester, the better chance we'll have of turning our aims into reality.

Needless to say, this list is not exhaustive, as there's lots of other things you could no doubt do as well. So, if you have any other ideas (or comments) please let us know. E-mail: manchester@freepublictransports.com.
