FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT CAMPAIGN START TOUR
OF GTR MANCHESTER IN SALE TOWN CENTRE

CfFPT Campaigners in Sale Town Centre on Saturday 7th February 2009

On Saturday 7th February, ten CfFPT activists braved the freezing cold weather (yet again!) to promote the case for free public transport in Sale town centre. The open air/open microphone meeting is the first of many the CfFPT intend to stage throughout Greater Manchester in the months ahead to help win grassroots support for what we're fighting for.

For over an hour we managed to keep up a constant stream of speeches on the p.a. system, distributed thousands of leaflets and collected several hundred signatures for our growing petition.

Our campaign's aims were generally well received, a not insignificant number of locals engaging in quite lengthy discussions with some of us, and was generally regarded as a successful initiative by all those who took part in it.

Watch this space (and our noticeboard) for details of our next open air meetings in March and April. We'll be coming to your area soon!

MANCHESTER JOURNALISTS ADD THEIR SUPPORT
TO CAMPAIGN FOR FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT!

We are pleased to announce that the Manchester Branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has agreed to affiliate to the CfFPT.  This means we now have 3 locally based trade union branches as affiliates (see article on UNITE next to this one).  It's a good start but we need many more.  If you are a member of a union, why not ask your branch to put what we're fighting for on the agenda of your next meeting (we can provide a speaker if necessary!)

COMPRESSED AIR TECHNOLOGY MAY CONTRIBUTE
TO WINNING CASE FOR FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT!

The benefits of new Compressed Air techology could help to win the case for Free Public Transport
The potential of a pollution free, almost zero cost alternative to our, by comparison, currently highly polluting and expensive public transport bus network in Greater Manchester would surely help us to win what we're fighting for as a campaign, and here it might be in the shape of the latest 'compressed air' technology.

Amongst its benefits, this technology boasts that it is:
            Pollution Free
Adaptable to the number of passengers travelling
            Economic
            Cost efficient at purchase
in no need of an expensive infrastructure
and is agile in road traffic.

The system can also be leased by municipalities and used as an alternative to conventional buses in a very cost efficient way considering the price of fuel. Indeed, according to the manufacturers, provides the possibility of a totally free urban transport system given its overall cost-effectiveness. The operating costs being easily recoverable (according to them) by adverts on the vehicle and on inboard screens.

Sounds too good to believe, but surely worthy of investigation? What do you think? See their website at: http://www.mdi.lu/english/multiflowair.php and e-mail us with your thoughts.
